Hamlet in Hawaii

Every Shakespeare Production on Oahu Ever (Work in Progress)

Originally Published on Facebook Notes (July 22, 2015)

All right, so realizing that this week’s production of The Winter’s Tale is the first time the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival has fully staged a play for the second time (last season’s Original Practices Rep staged Much Ado, Taming of the Shrew and Lear for a second time but the staging was partially improvised) made me curious about Shakespeare in Hawaii in general. I decided to hop on line and track down everything I could about every production of Shakespeare on Oahu. I know there have been productions of many of his plays on neighbor islands as well, but I’m limiting my search to Oahu so this list doesn’t get too huge.

I’m also limiting this list currently to University, Community and Professional theaters. I’ve also added any reference to a staging I found from over 100 years ago. I might add primary and secondary school productions to the list later.

I’m going alphabetical by play here. This is by no means exhaustive (see notes below) and will be updated as I find more information. I’m tagging a bunch of you that I think might know more than I.

I am deeply indebted to many people, but particularly Daniel Akiyama for his research and fact checking. Thank you also to Mark Lawhorn and Vanita Ray Smith for sharing so much information.

Future plans – add miscellaneous productions that included scenes from Shakespeare (Shakespeare’s Birthday party, etc); include high school productions (including HYTE productions); Add West Side Story performances.

The Royal Shakespeare Company is listed as a special event at UHM Kennedy Theatre for the 1975-76 Season. Daniel Akiyama reports they played “John Barton’s THE HOLLOW CROWN”

I’m having a hard time quickly locating the LCC, WCC, etc theatre season information for past seasons. I know they’ve done more.

I’m still going through newspaper archives for earlier shows. There’s so much information at the Library of Congress site. Thank you to Daniel Akiyama for pointing me in that direction.
