I am very pleased to present you, at last, with the “yes” list. Many of you made suggestions and I appreciate them all, but these are the ones that struck me as “must do.” Inclusion on this list doesn’t necessarily mean that I will create all of them (life circumstances being an ever-changing thing) but means rather that I intend to write these lists at some point. I’ve ranked them by how urgently I feel like I want to start these lists at this point in time.
Hey, also, this website is two years old now. Hurray age!
28. Dinosaurs
Suggested by: Paul Edelkamp
What Will I Draw?
Dinosaurs. Lots of dinosaurs.
What Research is Needed?
Depending on how I decide to restrict the list, I will need to identify a list of dinosaurs that I’ll be ranking and try to find either current or widely inaccurate artistic representations of those dinosaurs.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I will probably pick one particular period of dinosaurs – like Triassic, Jurassic or Cretaceous. Depending on how many dinosaurs we’re talking about, I might also apply size restrictions or limit it to specific sub-categories. This means I could potentially do several different dinosaur entries, which would suit me just fine.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
I can’t predict this at this time, but I’m comfortable with dinosaurs being an ongoing project like my singles project.
27. Top 20 Zippy’s locations on Oahu
Suggested by: Steve Holtebeck
What Will I Draw?
Menu items from Zippy’s or pictures of myself and my dining companions at the various Zippy’s.
What Research is Needed?
I’ll need to take some photos of Zippy’s menus. Also, it appears that there are 23 Zippy’s on Oahu, if Foursquare is to be believed, so I’d want to visit each of them. I’d probably want this, thus, turn this into “Every Zippy’s On Oahu, Ranked.” Honestly, I love Zippy’s – especially Zippy’s Makiki – so this would be a passion project.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’ll probably order the same thing at each location on the dine-in side (where there is a dine-in side). Ideally, this would be a good project to tackle with a friend. I’d probably crowd source criteria for evaluation.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Either one or two depending on how ambitious I’m feeling.
26. Happy Days Spin-offs
Suggested by: Rebecca Stanton
What Will I Draw?
Chachi, but only once. Also, logos for each of the shows.
What Research is Needed?
There were seven spin-offs. I have watched all of them in the ancient past. I would probably read Wikipedia entries and try to find clips to remind me of the shows.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I will aim for inclusion, which means I will fall on the “Out of the Blue was a spin-off of Happy Days” side of the controversy.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One.
25. Styles of Improvisational Theatre
Suggested by: Shaun Landry
What Will I Draw?
Maybe logos from some of the better known improvisational theatres, like iO, Second City and UCB? Not really sure.
What Research is Needed?
What constitutes a style of improvisational theatre is a heady subject that many of us have wrestled with over the years. If you can create it, you can improvise it, which means you have short form shows, long form shows, music shows, shows that focus on a theatre or film genre, etc. I’d need to reach a conclusion about what constitutes a style of Improvisational Theatre. Having done that, I’d either draw from my own experience of performing and watching to make some intelligent points about my aesthetics of improvisation or just turn on my inner troll
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I think I would aim for “big general categories” instead of getting into the manini nitty gritty.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Ideally, one, but I can see it taking up more.
24. Disney (or Pixar) animated films
Suggested by: Lane Bourn
What Will I Draw?
Characters from the various Disney or Pixar films.
What Research is Needed?
I’d need to select Disney or Pixar or… Pixar would be a bit easier since there are currently only 21 films and I’ve seen nearly all of them. I’ve been able to watch entire animated movies in the last year or so, so some of my reluctance to watch films might not be an issue here. Disney has released significantly more features and I’ve not seen all of them. I would be wise to enlist the help of a Disney fanatic in creating the list and the entries.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Full length films only. For Disney, I would only include films produced under the Walt Disney Animation banner.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Two for Pixar, maybe Four or Five for Disney (I didn’t count the number of official features)
23. Honolulu Hikes
Suggested by: Eric Caldwell
What Will I Draw?
Maybe I’ll just share my photos from the hikes.
What Research is Needed?
More hiking! I would want to rank only hikes that I’ve been on. I’ve also wanted to do “Mini-Parks of Honolulu” at some point, but that is a separate thing.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I won’t do hikes that make me fear for my life or that are official kapu.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Two or three.
22. Pantone colours of the year
Suggested by: Ichina Parker
What Will I Draw?
I’ll just share the colors.
What Research is Needed?
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
No restrictions needed.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One unless I have a lot more to say than I imagine I will.
21. Marvel Comics Movies
Suggested by: Steve Schwaner
What Will I Draw?
Movie posters or characters
What Research is Needed?
I’d need to decide which films I’d cover from the larger list. Just theatrically released live action? Direct to video? The first TV appearance of Thor in The Incredible Hulk Returns? So clearly, I need to put in some thought.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’m not sure yet.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Six minimum.
20. Fruits
Suggested by: Frank Episale
What Will I Draw?
Fruits, possibly with goofy faces. Or maybe take photos of fruits and add goofy faces.
What Research is Needed?
Much fruit will need to be consumed. Also, I’ll need to decide which fruits to cover and figure out how to acquire them if they’re not readily available at Safeway.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’ll need to put an “available on Oahu” or “available at Foodland” restriction on this list. I don’t want to import fruit. I don’t intend to do sub-categories of, say, apples. We’re not listing Fuji, Delicious, etc as separate fruit.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Maybe 3-4?
19. Monty Python Sketches
Suggested by: Paula Schlax
What Will I Draw?
Terry Gilliam things.
What Research is Needed?
Watch all the sketches!
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I am going to restrict this to the television show and not include live performances or films. I may put a minimum length limit on which sketches I’ll include. It would probably make sense to do this in four sets of entries, one for each season of the show.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
No idea, but this could be an ongoing project.
18. Military Career Advancement Levels
Suggested by: Lane Bourn
What Will I Draw?
The various insignia associated with the advancement levels.
What Research is Needed?
I’d probably want to talk to members of different branches. I can do some research online, but I’ve found in the past that online data about the branches of the U.S. military are often inaccurate. Furthermore, I’d want to get a sense about what actual service members think because otherwise my list would be “which insignia look the coolest.”
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
This is somewhat dependent on research, but I’d probably divide this into lists for each branch of service. Also, I won’t include Space Force even if it comes into existence because it’s a silly idea.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
At least four.
17. Pizza Toppings
Suggested by: Rachel Weaver
What Will I Draw?
I mean, the toppings themselves. On Pizza.
What Research is Needed?
I’d want to identify a “set of all standard pizza toppings” or perhaps identify a pizza chain (CPK? Dominoes?) that offers a standard set of toppings. Ideally, I would want to eat the toppings in question on some sort of diabetic friendly crust.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I would not do “all toppings possible” because that would make the list infinite. As I suggested in the research section, I’d want to narrow this down to a specific chain or a specific set of “standard” pizza toppings.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
I think I have to pay $1.09 for each additional topping, so I’m hoping no more than 1.
16. Grammar Rock Episodes
Suggested by: Cindi Knox
What Will I Draw?
Stills from the various episodes.
What Research is Needed?
I’d need to rewatch the nine episodes. I’d probably want to check with a language arts expert about their accuracy.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I would want to make sure that the responses to each individual episode focused on the grammar discussed in that episode.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Just one.
15. Multiplication Rock Episodes
Suggested by: Cindi Knox
What Will I Draw?
Stills from the various episodes.
What Research is Needed?
As with Grammar Rock, I’d want to watch the 11 episodes. I’d probably want to ponder if I should address America Rock, Science Rock, Computer Rock, Money Rock and Earth Rock.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Zero restrictions that I can think of. How wonderful!
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One.
14. Winning Words in the National Spelling Bee
Suggested by: Greg Wymer
What Will I Draw?
I guess I can draw the words?
What Research is Needed?
Done – well, and I’d want to define each word and use it in a sentence.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I can’t think of any.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
This would probably be done best as one long entry, but I could break it into 3-4 maybe.
13. Nippon Pro Baseball Logos
Suggested by: Grant Shibuya
What Will I Draw?
The logos! Most are pretty complicated, so expect a certain amount of MS-Paint related fury.
What Research is Needed?
The logos are here.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’d prefer to focus on logos that appear on the hats, so if those are different from the official logos, I will favor the hat logos.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One or Two.
12. Original Star Trek Episodes
Suggested by: Ed Baird
What Will I Draw?
The various great Star Trek characters, perhaps as they were depicted in the animated series.
What research is Needed?
I have probably seen every episode nine times, but that was decades ago. I’d either need to read up on the Wikipedia entries, rewatch the episodes, or go from memory. Those of you who are avid readers of this website can guess the route I’m most likely to take. There were three seasons (here’s the episode list for season #1) so I’d probably approach this in three chunks.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Only broadcast episodes, no movies, no pilots. I’d break this down, as I said, by season. Maybe I’d have a final master list.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Three per season plus a master list, so Ten.
11. Fingers and Toes
Suggested by: Miss Catwings
What Will I Draw?
I will use photos of my fingers and toes.
What Research is Needed?
I’d need to put on my glasses and look carefully at each of my fingers and toes. Presumably, Miss Catwings wasn’t suggesting I rank her fingers and toes or all fingers and toes.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I would want to look at all sides of each finger and toe. I’d make a list for fingers and a list for toes.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Two – the fingers list and the toe list.
10. Sesame Street Puppets
Suggested by: Cindi Knox
What Will I Draw?
Each puppet!
What Research is Needed?
I’d want to double check to make sure this is a canonical list. I’d also want to find at least one clip of each of these muppets in action in context of Sesame Street.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’d only look at muppets that appeared on Sesame Street in a significant role – i.e. no background muppets.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Perhaps as many as ten.
9. Madness Music Videos
Suggested by: Aaron Pughes
What Will I Draw?
Maybe album covers, maybe single covers, maybe just images of Suggs.
What Research is Needed?
Identify the cannon videos and watch them. I’ve wanted to do something like this for videos by OKGO so this would be a good first pass at video review.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’m going to say that this is for any video they officially released, so no unofficial videos.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One or two.
8. Satellites: Ranked Best to Worst
Suggested by: Mike Mariani
What Will I Draw?
The various known moons.
What Research is Needed?
I’m assuming Mike meant moons and not man-made satellites. I would look up pictures of each moon in our solar system and do a little research about that moon.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Only moons in our solar system.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
There are apparently 150 moons in our solar system. So as many as 15.
7. T.S. Eliot’s Cats
Suggested by: Kennly Asato
What Will I Draw?
Each cat as it’s represented in Cats.
What Research is Needed?
I’d best reread Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I’m going to limit this to cats portrayed in Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One or two,
6. Celebrity Kevins
Suggested by: Jason Kanda
What Will I Draw?
Each glorious Kevin in abstract detail.
What Research is Needed?
What constitutes a celebrity? Are we only talking about living Kevins? In all fields or just entertainment? This will take some work and some deep, serious thought.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Kevin must be the name they’re known by,
How Many Entries Do I Project?
I have no idea.
5. Deities of the Cthulhu Mythos
Suggested by: Deekay Krause
What Will I Draw?
My best approximation of each deity.
What Research is Needed?
Clearly, I need to decide if we’re talking about all Deities or just the Elder Gods. I’d want to find some support documentation about each god and ideally an artist’s representation of each.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
I will need to be careful not to offend any of the Elder Gods.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Probably one, but as many as Four.
4. Letters of the Alphabet
Suggested by: Jeff Norman
What Will I Draw?
Each Letter.
What Research is Needed?
Gosh, I hope none.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Current standard letters only.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
One.
3. Zodiac signs, But Based Only On The Aesthetics of Their Constellation
Suggested by: Joe Koenan
What Will I Draw?
The constellations.
What Research is Needed?
I’ll need to find some decent images of each constellation and make some aesthetic judgement calls.
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
Only the 12 classical zodiac symbols need apply – no Ophiuchus.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
Just one.
2. Cereal Mascots
Suggested by: Tony Pisculli and Steph Kong
What Will I Draw?
Cereal Mascots! In fact, I’ve started.
What Research is Needed?
I am not up to date on current cereal mascots, so I’ll need to look into this. I’d want to see if they are portrayed in commercials or just on the box. This is the one entry that I read and went “Hell Yes, I’m Doing That.”
What Restrictions Will I Apply?
My heart wants to do “cereal mascots from when I was growing up” so I can include Freakies and Baron Von Redberry. However, I think I’d be better served by focusing on current cereal mascots of U.S brands of cereal that are marketed nationally.
How Many Entries Do I Project?
As many as necessary, Karen.
1. Suggestions of Things to be Ranked
Suggested by: Lane Bourn
Done.
Coming Soon: Cereal Mascots
